Context
The CIRCULAR project is a 3.5 years Cross Disciplinary Project (https://circular.univ-grenoble-alpes.fr/), funded by IDEX Grenoble (https://www.communaute-univ-grenoble-alpes.fr/en/) for an amount of 1.45 Million Euros.
The CIRCULAR project aims at developing reliable circular industrial systems able to transform post-used products into new added-value products.
Industrial systems will have to face the main Industry of the Future challenges: resource scarcity, energy efficiency, customization expectations, job quality required by the fourth industrial revolution, etc. This project will show that agile circular industrial systems will give companies the ability to satisfy those requirements while proposing new high-added-value products while minimizing the use of material and energy resources. We want to move towards a circular economic “take-make-consume-reuse” model instead of a classical linear “take-make-consume-dispose” model. The main scientific obstacles are production systems agility, human/ machine collaboration, implementation of the numerical solutions and design and implementation of the new necessary organizations.
In this framework, the project consortium has the strong ambition to develop a sustainable multidisciplinary research and industrial network to address the circular industrial system issues at local, national and international levels. The objective is to launch several ambitious projects with the main renowned international universities in the field and the relevant industrial networks.

Duration: Three years, starting fall 2018
Position fully funded by European project (ERC consolidator) PROCSYS
Context and Objectives
Cyber-physical systems (CPS) consist of computational elements monitoring and controlling physical entities. The main objective of the PROCSYS project is to propose a general framework for the design of programmable CPS that will allow engineers to develop advanced functionalities using a high-level language for specifying the behaviors of a CPS while abstracting details of the dynamics. Controllers enforcing the specified behaviors will be generated from a high-level program using an automated model-based synthesis tool. Correctness of the controllers will be guaranteed by following the correct by construction synthesis paradigm through the use of symbolic control techniques [1,2]: the continuous physical dynamics is abstracted by a symbolic model, which is a discrete dynamical system; an interface consisting of low-level controllers is designed such that the physical system and the symbolic model behaves identically; a high-level symbolic controller is then synthesized automatically from the high-level program and the symbolic model.
Work description
We will develop efficient controller synthesis techniques based on incremental exploration of the dynamics of the symbolic model, which can be computed on the fly while synthesizing the controller. This has been the approach developed in our preliminary work [3], which has demonstrated significant improvements in terms of scalability for safety specifications and deterministic symbolic models. The main idea is to define priorities on the transitions of the symbolic model and explore the transitions with higher priority first. The transitions of lower priority are only explored if the control specification cannot be met with the former transitions. In the PhD thesis, we will develop efficient controller synthesis algorithms, which extend the work above in the following directions:
1. Non-deterministic symbolic models, extending the applicability of the approach to a broad class of systems
2. General specifications defined in the high-level language developed within the PROCSYS project, describing rich and complex behaviors
3. Additional synthesis objectives (timing constraints, quantitative performance criteria, robustness)
Applications to case studies, e.g. in the field of autonomous driving will be considered.
Background of the candidate
The candidate must hold a Master in control theory, applied mathematics or computer science with a strong mathematical background. Programming skills are also needed.

General context
Over the last twenty years, an increasing attention has been paid to recommender systems, widely popularized by the Netflix Challenge. The main goal of a recommender system is to provide some users, with personalized products, taking into account their profile and preferences.
Recent challenges are about the recommendation of products very complex to describe : jobs, partners… Their characteristics can mix heterogeneous features: quantitative (as ratings) and/or qualitative (as reviews).
Moreover, new questions are emerging about explainability of algorithms. Nowadays, Artificial Intelligence algorithms are democratized in our erveyday life, and consumers want to understand the decision resulting from these algorithms (why this decision and not another one ?) as well as quantify the importance of each factor (element) in the decision process (which element is the most important/sensitive). They require more explainability of AI algorithms.
In addition, the new European legislation on data protection foresees to impose more transparency to Artificial Intelligence algorithm. The law envisages to make compulsory the agreement of users for using personal data, which will reduce the amount of data that can be collected about users. The customer will also have to be informed about the way their personal data is used. From the algorithms point of view, the decrease of data will impact the quality of the recommmendations.
All these changes, will impact shortly and significantly the design of algorithms. In this thesis, we aim at designing and implementing new explainable and transparent recommender systems for complex products, in the frame of data sparsity.
Scientific challenges and program
The challenges are four fold :
Definition, in a quantitative way, of the concept of transparency, and develop statistical methods to automatically quantify the transparency degree of an algorithm.
Classification of recommender systems from the literature, from the transparency point of view and/or robustness degree with respect to missing data
Conception of new hybrid and explainable recommender systems, robust to sparse data. The products being complex, the heterogeneous descriptions of the products, as well as the multi-sources of information, will be used to construct understandable explanation. Especially, natural language processing, and hybrid (content/social) approaches will be studied. The algorithms will also be able to quantify the weights and the sensitivity of each factor in the final decision.
Constitution of data sets, allowing to evaluate transparency of recommender systems
Application
The application should include a brief description of research interests and past experience, a CV, degrees and grades, a copy of Master thesis (or a draft thereof), motivation letter (short but pertinent to this call), relevant publications (if any), and other relevant documents. PhD Position at National Centre for Meteorological Research, Toulouse, France
Title : Object processing of convective-scale model outputs
Supervisors : Dr Laure Raynaud, Dr Philippe Arbogast, Dr Etienne Mémin (HDR)
laure.raynaud@meteo.fr, philippe.arbogast@meteo.fr, etienne.memin@inria.fr
Summary
The French convective-scale Arome model, operational at Météo-France, is able to accurately represent some severe weather events, such as thundertsorms, heavy precipitation, fog or strong winds. However, the first years of Arome utilization suggest that these forecasts are affected by position, amplitude and timing errors. In order to improve these deterministic forecasts, an ensemble prediction system based on the Arome model has recently been developed, and provides an estimation of the forecast uncertainty.
The development of relevant post-processing methods is another way of improving forecasts. Among them, a possible solution is the object-based approach: the main idea behind object-oriented processing consists in extracting the predictable signal from forecasts, under the form of coherent features, while the smaller and less predictable scales are filtered out. In this context, Arbogast et al. (2016) and Destouches (2017) proposed a probabilistic approach to automatically detect and track precipitation objects. The method is based on the use of segmentation methods for the detection part and of a stochastic particle filter for the tracking part.
The goal of the PhD is to pursue this work and to extend its application to other meteorological parameters such as cloud cover and wind gusts.
Organization of the PhD
The first part of the PhD plans to refine the current detection/tracking algorithm for precipitation forecasts. In particular, the goal is to provide a robust algorithm, able to automatically detect and recognize precipitation of different types.
The verification of object detection/tracking methods has been mainly subjective so far. Objective verification will be the next important aspect to consider, in order to quantify the added value of the object processing.
Finally, this work will be extended to other weather parameters. Basically, all parameters with a high spatial and/or temporal degree of intermittency could benefit from this object processing.
Good knowledge of numerical modelization, data assimilation and image processing would be useful.
